Reason # 21 CAPE TOWN (Tamboerskloof & Surrounds)
Tamboerskloof: A Hidden Gem in the Mother City
I had the privilege of living in beautiful Tamboerskloof during two Seasons of my life while working in beautiful Cape Town. First in 1990 and then again in 2019-2020.
This morning, (while visiting friends in the Bo-Kaap) I had the joy of spending two hours walking through this wonderful neighborhood.
Hence, today we are celebrating the beauty of this eclectic spot in Cape Town - walking distance form the City Centre, Gardens and Adderley Street.
Nestled in the folds of Cape Town’s City Bowl, Tamboerskloof exudes a peaceful charm that balances urban life well with the serenity of nature. With its winding streets lined with Edwardian and Victorian houses, shaded by wild olive trees and flowering bougainvillea, this suburb feels like a timeless pocket just beneath the towering presence of Table Mountain and Lion’s Head.
The views alone are enough to make one pause. Whether you’re sipping coffee on a balcony or strolling through the leafy avenues, the mountains seem close enough to touch, shifting in light and shadow as the day passes. Mornings are often brushed with the gold of the rising sun, while evenings glow with the amber haze of sunset washing over the city skyline below. Come with me for a cappuccino in one of the many quaint little coffeehouse - like the one in Queen Street.
There’s almost a village feel to Tamboerskloof — dogs being walked, parents and little ones in strollers on their way to parks, and neighbours greeting each other - perhaps by the nod of a head only. But there is certainly a sense of belonging when you walk the streets. Like a quiet little rural town at times. Yet, just a few minutes’ walk away, Kloof Street hums and beckons with the life of cafés, galleries, shops and boutique hotels offering the best of both worlds.
It’s a place where time slows down just enough for you to breathe it all in — with the scent of jasmine in the air, the distant sound of church bells or the adhan (the Islamic call to prayer) and the ever-present rhythm of Cape Town's soul.
Lets see what is happening the first Thursday of every month in Tamboerskloof and surrounds.
Come walk the streets of Tamboerskloof with me - and see why this is indeed one of the Reasons why I feel so blessed to have called this place home.
